Философ, педагог, общественный деятель. Окончил Вермонтский университет [Vermont, University of] (1879), получил степень доктора [Ph.D.] в университете Джонса Хопкинса [Johns Hopkins University] (1884). Преподавал в Миннесотском [Minnesota, University of] (1888-89), Мичиганском [Michigan, University of] (1884-88, 1889-94) и Чикагском [Chicago, University of] (1894-1904) университетах, в 1904-30 - профессор Колумбийского университета [Columbia University], возглавлял педагогический факультет [Teachers College]. В педагогике отвергал авторитарные методы, делая упор на эксперименты и практические знания. Представитель школы прагматизма, автор учения инструментализма [instrumentalism], согласно которому формы и методы человеческой деятельности - это инструменты решения личных и общественных проблем. Внес большой вклад в формулирование ценностей демократического индустриального общества. Автор ряда философских трудов, среди которых: "Психология" ["Psychology"] (1887), "Школа и общество" ["The School and Society"] (1899; 1915), "Демократия и образования" ["Democracy and Education"] (1916), "Природа и поведение человека" ["Human Nature and Conduct"] (1922), "Общество и его проблемы" ["The Public and Its Problems"] (1927), "Искусство как опыт" ["Art as Experience"] (1934), "Свобода и культура" ["Freedom and Culture"] (1939) и др.
